Privacy Policy

What this is

Finiqians is a trivia and social app for the Lebanese diaspora. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and what we never do with it. It is written to be read, not scrolled past.

What we collect

Account: your email, a display name, a username and a password (stored only as a secure hash — we cannot read it). Your age, as a yes or no: when you sign up you confirm you are at least 13. We record that you confirmed it and the day you did — we do not ask for, or store, your date of birth. We used to; we stopped, because the date was only ever read to run that one check. If you sign in with Google or Apple: we receive an identifier that account gives us, your email address, and — from Google only, and only if you have one — your name and profile photo. We never receive your password, and we ask for nothing beyond identity: no contacts, no calendar, no files. Apple lets you hide your real email; if you do, we only ever see the forwarding address Apple creates for us. Profile, all optional: the country and city you live in, the town in Lebanon your family comes from, a photo, a bio, and your language. Play: your scores, answers, streaks, duels and badges — the game cannot work without them. Messages: chats you send are stored so they can be delivered, and are visible only to you and the person you sent them to. Moderators see a message only if someone reports it. Notifications: if you allow them, your device gives us a push token — an address for that one phone, issued by Apple or Google. It identifies a device, not a person, and it is deleted when you sign out, turn notifications off, or uninstall the app. Technical: your device timezone (so your daily challenge resets on your day), a random per-install identifier, and a one-way hash of your network address. The last two exist to keep the leaderboards honest — the hash cannot be turned back into your address.

What we do with it

Run the game, the leaderboards, chat and invites. Send you the notifications you asked for. Send the few emails the account itself needs — confirming your address, resetting a password. Understand, in aggregate, where the diaspora plays from, so we can make the app better. That analysis happens on our own server, first-party.

What we never do

We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. There are no ad networks in the app, and nothing in the app sends your activity to a third-party analytics or tracking company. Nothing here follows you across other apps or websites. Three companies handle data on our behalf, and only to deliver something you asked for: Apple and Google carry push notifications to your phone, and our mail provider sends account emails. They act on our instructions and for nothing else.

The website

finiqians.com is separate from the app, and one thing is true there that is not true in the app: if you agree to it, we count visits using Google Analytics — how many people arrive and which sections they read. We ask first. Nothing is loaded and no cookie is set until you press Allow, and closing or ignoring the banner counts as no. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookies link in the footer. If you agree, Google receives your truncated network address and a random identifier for that browser. We have turned off advertising features and cross-site signals, so it is used to count visits and nothing else. If you decline, the analytics script is never loaded at all — not loaded-but-silent. The contact form stores what you send us, plus a one-way hash of your network address to limit abuse, so we can reply and see that we replied.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to a particular use. The copy never needs to go through us at all — Settings → Download my data hands you everything as one file, and deleting your whole account is a button on the same screen. If you are in the UK, the EU or the EEA, those are rights under the GDPR, along with the right to receive your data in a portable form and the right to withdraw consent at any time. Our legal basis is the contract between us for running your account and the game, your consent for push notifications and for website analytics, and our legitimate interest in keeping leaderboards honest and the service secure. If you think we have got it wrong, you can complain to your national data protection authority.

Where your data is

Our server is in France, and that is where your account, your scores and your messages live. Where a company acting for us is outside it — Apple and Google for push notifications, and Google for website analytics if you agreed to it — the transfer relies on the standard contractual clauses those companies publish. We keep your data for as long as your account exists. Delete the account and it goes with it — including your photo and any pictures you sent in chat. Two things expire sooner on their own: analytics events are deleted after 14 months, and spent sign-in tokens after 30 days. Contact-form messages are kept while they are being dealt with and for a reasonable period afterwards, and backups roll off within a month.

Leaderboards are public

Your display name, username, photo, level, scores, country flag and origin town appear on leaderboards and your public profile — that visibility is the point of a leaderboard. Your email, city, messages and everything else stay private. You can leave the town and country blank and stay off those boards entirely.

Blocking and reports

If you block someone, neither of you can message, challenge or find the other. If you report a message or a player, a moderator will read the reported content to act on it.

Deleting your account

Settings → Delete my account, any time, no email required. It permanently removes your profile, scores, friendships and messages. This is a real delete, not a deactivation.

Children

Finiqians is for 13 and over. Signing up requires confirming you are, and no account is created without that confirmation. We do not knowingly keep accounts for younger children — if you believe one exists, contact us and we will remove it.
